I'm not sure when they added this, but the effect would be similar to an auto-fade function, though you don't have any controls over the fade curve. In 3.3.6 (newish as of this post), there is an option under the General preferences in OA to "Smooth Cut and Delete Boundries" which seems to do a subtle auto fade, fairly close to the edit point.
